mazu
mazu, also known as matsu, is a revered sea goddess deeply rooted in chinese folk religion, taoism, and buddhism. believed to be the deified form of lin mo niang, a shamaness from the 10th century, mazu is venerated by fishermen and sailors as a protective guardian of the seas. she is said to manifest during storms as a striking figure — "a beautiful woman in red garments, with flowing hair and no makeup" — guiding ships to safety and diverting typhoons from their paths.

her worship spans the coastal regions of china, where she is celebrated through elaborate rituals and vibrant festivals. among her devotees, she is widely honored as the compassionate and powerful queen of heaven.
