tudi gong & tudi po
tudi gong and tudi po are a husband-and-wife pair of guardian spirits in chinese folk religion. tudi gong, known as the earth god, is often shown as a kind old man with a white beard. his wife, tudi po, helps balance his generosity-though people in different regions see her personality in different ways.
according to legend, after tudi gong became a god, he gave out blessings too freely. other gods complained to the jade emperor, who rules the heavens. to solve the problem, the jade emperor chose a young woman-who was wrongly sentenced to death-and made her tudi gong's wife. her job was to keep his kindness from going overboard.
